Pastor John Gray has been released from the hospital after battling a life-threatening pulmonary embolism and undergoing multiple surgeries.
The megachurch pastor shared the news about his release in a July 19 statement posted on his Instagram page by wife, Aventer Gray.
The post included a picture of Gray’s empty hospital bed and a lengthy caption about the road ahead.
“The devil wanted me to die in this bed,” he said. “This bed was supposed to be my end. Pull the sheet over my head and wheel me to the morgue. This bed, where I entertained my deepest fears, regrets, and triumphs, was supposed to be the period-A life ended, but unfinished.”

He praised God for sparing his life.
“Glory! Hallelujah! Because of God, this bed is now a testimony. As I wave goodbye to this bed, I say GOD THANK YOU FOR SAVING AND SPARING MY LIFE! Yes, I have a long way to go, but I’m not dead-so that’s a great start!” he added.
Earlier this month, Gray was admitted to a critical care unit with a saddle pulmonary embolism in the pulmonary artery and lung blood clots, and needed two types of surgery, Aventer said in a July 9 Instagram post.
John Gray was initially hospitalized in Alabama before being moved to a medical facility outside Atlanta, Georgia. He thanked the doctors and nurses at both hospitals for helping to save his life.
“Because of prayer and an amazing medical team, I am on course for a COMPLETE recovery!” he said in his post.
Gray also thanked his wife, their children and members of Relentless Church in Greenville, South Carolina, where he serves as senior pastor.
“I still need a ton of rest, a lot of benchmarks to hit, outpatient follow up visits, monitoring, and blah blah blah-but know I’m grateful for every expression, I am getting stronger,” he wrote before concluding, ” I’M OUTTTTT!”
Aventer, who is co-pastor of the church, has been posting regular updates about her husband’s recovery. Over the weekend, she left Gray’s bedside to return to Relentless where she shared that he was in “amazing spirits.”
John Gray took over leadership of Relentless in 2018, which also has a campus in Powder Springs, Georgia. He previously served as associate pastor at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.
Gray was featured on the OWN docuseries, The Book of John Gray, and has made appearances on Red Table Talk, and Unsung.
